What steps can I take to address structural damage?

Cavity wall tie
Cavity walls have been a common feature of buildings in the UK for over 100 years. Two leaves of brick or stonework are held together using wall ties or metal straps. In some circumstances, these wall ties can corrode or fail, resulting in cracking in the masonry, visible structural movement or in extreme cases, some sections of masonry can collapse. Repair to cavity wall tie failure is quite straight forward. New stainless steel ties are installed, either mechanically, driven or with resin. The previous wall ties can be removed, or if removing will cause further issues, they can be left. Leaving the old wall ties in situ will not impact the new ties.

Crack stitching
Crack stitching is a method of repair for cracked brick and stonework, stabilising the cracked masonry and is the most widely effective method of repair. Crack stitching involves inserting steel reinforcement bars (often called “helical steel bars”) into slots cut across a cracked wall. These bars are embedded using grout or resin, then concealed by re-pointing the surface. The goal is to restore the structural integrity of the wall without needing full rebuilding. It is a cost-effective method of repair, with minimal disruption to structure and appearance, with non-invasive, long-lasting results.

Lintel repair
Lintel repair involves fixing or replacing a structural support (usually above windows and doors) that has failed or is showing signs of stress or damage. A lintel can be made of steel, concrete, wood, or brick, and it carries the weight of the wall above an opening. Repair methods include crack stitching, steel angle or lintel installation, lintel replacement and resin bonded reinforcement.

Wall buttresses
Where a garden or retaining wall has suffered from movement, bowing or structural weakness, a masonry buttress can provide additional support and stability. Buttresses can be built against the existing wall to help resist lateral pressure and prevent further movement, providing a practical alternative to complete rebuilding where the existing structure can be retained. At PointUK, we can assess the condition of the wall and advise whether a buttress or other structural repair would be the most appropriate solution.
