Mortar joints are designed to wear before the bricks do. Over time, weather, frost and movement break them down, and once they fail, water can get into the wall. Catching it early keeps the repair simple.
Signs to look out for
- Mortar that crumbles or turns to powder when you rub it
- Joints that are recessed well behind the face of the brick
- Gaps or cracks running along the joints
- Damp patches on inside walls, especially after heavy rain
- Loose or moving bricks
Why it matters
Open joints let water into the masonry. In winter that water freezes and expands, which can crack bricks and speed up decay. Repointing seals the wall again and protects the brickwork for years to come.
What to do next
If you have spotted any of these signs, a survey will tell you whether the whole wall needs repointing or just the worst areas. Get in touch to arrange a free survey.
