Because chimney stacks sit above the roofline, they are exposed to wind, rain and frost from every side. Problems often go unnoticed until they cause damp or damage inside the house.
1. Crumbling or missing mortar
Open joints let water into the stack and can leave bricks loose.
2. A leaning stack
A stack that leans can be a sign of failed mortar or sulphate attack, and should be checked as soon as possible.
3. Damaged flashing
Lead flashing seals the joint between the stack and the roof. If it has lifted or cracked, water can get in.
4. Damp patches on chimney breasts
Staining inside the house, especially near the chimney breast, often starts with a problem on the stack.
5. Loose or cracked pots
Chimney pots and their mortar haunching can work loose over time and become a safety risk.
Getting it checked
Most chimney problems can be fixed with repointing or partial rebuilds if caught early. Get in touch to arrange an inspection.
