Lime mortar

Repointing with lime mortar

Built with lime
Many older and traditional buildings were constructed using lime mortar. Unlike modern cement-based mortars, lime mortar is designed to work with the natural movement and moisture characteristics of traditional brick and stone. When these buildings require repointing, using the correct mortar is essential.

Our approach
Our approach is based on understanding the existing building and selecting a mortar that is compatible with the original masonry, helping to protect the building while preserving its character.

Lime mortar explained

What is lime mortar?

A traditional building material
Lime mortar is a traditional building material made using lime, aggregate and water. For centuries, it has been used to construct and repair brick and stone buildings throughout the UK.

Flexible and permeable
Unlike a hard cement mortar, lime mortar is relatively flexible and permeable. These characteristics allow traditional masonry to accommodate small amounts of movement and allow moisture to move through the wall and evaporate. This is particularly important in older buildings, which were generally constructed to manage moisture differently from modern buildings.

Why lime

Why use lime mortar?

Letting the building breathe
Traditional masonry needs to be able to breathe. When rain or moisture enters a traditional wall, the materials need to be able to release that moisture naturally. Lime mortar allows moisture to migrate through the mortar joints and evaporate. This is one of the reasons lime mortar has remained such an important material in the repair and conservation of traditional buildings.

Every building is different
Different buildings can require different specifications depending on their construction, exposure, existing materials and condition. That’s why assessing the existing masonry is such an important part of the process.

The benefits of lime mortar

Flexibility
Lime mortar can accommodate small amounts of natural movement within a building without behaving like a rigid cement-based joint.

Breathability
Its permeability allows moisture to move through the mortar, helping traditional masonry manage moisture naturally.

Compatibility
A suitable lime mortar can be softer and more flexible than many traditional bricks and stones, allowing the mortar to weather without unnecessarily damaging the masonry.

Appearance
Lime mortar can provide a traditional, natural appearance that complements period and heritage properties.

Longevity
When correctly specified, applied and maintained, lime mortar can provide a durable repair while respecting the way the original building was constructed.
